According to a report from ESPN, Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is interested in any improvements surrounding RB Leipzig star Timo Werner’s future. Timo Werner, 23, has been in sensational form at the Bundesliga this season, scoring 20 goals in 19 games. He has netted three goals in six Champions League games. ESPN assert the Germany international’s goalscoring record at Leipzig has caught the interest of Manchester United but the Bundesliga side don’t have any intention of selling him in the January transfer window as they pursue the league name. Manchester United completed their first signing of the January transfer window in midfielder Bruno Fernandes’ kind. With injuries to Scott McTominay and Paul Pogba leaving United light Fernandes’ timely addition is a boost. Solskjaer confirmed on Wednesday night that he wanted to sign a striker, having noticed both Mason Greenwood and Anthony Martial struggle in their 1-0 Carabao Cup win over Manchester City.
United allowed Romelu Lukaku to join Inter Milan until the onset of the season but neglected to substitute him. That abandoned Solskjaer using Marcus Rashford, Martial and Greenwood as the only alternatives. However, a back injury to Rashford that could rule him out for more than two months has only further highlighted why the department is in need of strengthening since they do not have another forward to score goals frequently. That being said, the Red Devils must choose Timo Werner in the summer. The 23-year-old has been scoring goals regularly in the previous two seasons in the Bundesliga, making him one of the most forwards of Europe now. Werner scored 16 goals and supplied nine assists in 30 Bundesliga matches last year, bettering his 2017/18 campaign’s numbers of 13 goals and eight assists. So far this season, he’s netted 25 goals across all contests and is showing no signs of slowing down. The Germany international has European experience as well and at 23, would fit of rebuilding a United side consisting of young players and academy products Solskjaer’s vision.
Solskjaer must plot a summertime transfer swoop for Werner with United yet to replace Lukaku. The German would not only fortify the striker position but also add some much-needed depth to the squad to compete next year.
