Premier League Stats: Aston Villa vs Manchester United

Lucas Digne, who switched from Everton to Villa Park a few days back in the transfer window, made his debut for the new club. Steven Gerrard’s men lined up in a 4-3-3- formation.

Ollie Watkins played a more central role along with Danny Ings. The front three played a lot closer to each other, allowing the full-backs to attack. Douglas Luiz played as a defensive midfielder, allowing other midfield players to join the attack.

Anthony Elanga started his first game in the Premier League this season as the away side played in a 4-3-3 formation. Edinson Cavani led the attack in the absence of Cristiano Ronaldo.

Edinson Cavani played a very deeper role and his average position was just near to the centre circle. Fred and Matic played in front of the back two, and Bruno Fernandes played as an attacking midfielder.

Manchester United dominated the possession in every phase of the first half. The Red Devils didn’t manage to carry the same momentum into the second half and conceded a lot of possession. The home team had a higher expected goal rate and created more positional attacks.

Phillipe Coutinho came off the bench and attempted two shots. Morgan Sanson had a good match in the midfield for Villa as he managed to make ten recoveries inside the opposition’s half. Mason Greenwood attempted the most number of shots in the match.

Aston Villa players attempted 12 shots with a 58.33% shot accuracy rate. Nine shots were attempted from inside the opposition’s 18-yard box, and one goal was scored from inside the 6-yard box.

Manchester United players attempted 13 shots and managed to hit the target six times. The players managed to attempt eight shots from inside the opposition’s penalty box.

The xT timeline shows that Manchester United players created a lot of threats in the first 20-minutes of the match. Aston Villa’s first attempt came after the 30-minutes mark. The home team created a lot of threats towards the end of the match.

Tyrone Mings had a good game for Villa at the back, and the centre-back attempted 79 passes. Most of his passes were towards Hause, Digne and Ramsey.

Alex Telles attempted 77 passes for his team. His 17 passes were towards Raphael Varane. The left-back was involved in a lot of attacks in the first half.

Aston Villa created a lot of threats from the left side. Right-back Matty Cash created the highest threat rate from passes.

Jacob Ramsey attempted the most number of dribbles in the match. His six dribbles created an xT rate of 0.09 from dribbles.

Manchester United players created threats from the left side. Bruno Fernandes and Alex Telles created the highest threats for their side.

Anthony Elanga attempted five dribbles in his first start of this season. The youngster was impressive, and his threat rate was the maximum in his team.

Aston Villa players won most of their defensive duels towards the left as Manchester United attacked a lot from that side.

The home team won seven aerial duels in the attacking third. Lucas Digne won four duels for his side.

Morgan Sanson contested four loose ball duels and didn’t lose a single duel as his side won ten duels in the middle third.

Fred contested 13 defensive duels for the away team and lost seven duels.

Raphael Varane and Anthony Elanga won three aerial duels each. The Red Devils won nine aerial duels in the middle, and five of them were towards the left side.

Manchester United players won six loose ball duels in the final third. Fred once again contested the most number of duels for his side.

Ralf Rangnick’s men were unable to carry the momentum into the second half and dropped points from a winning position. Aston Villa were the better side and earned a massive point. They have now taken four points in two games against the Red Devils this season in the Premier League.
